polly's big-girl room

September 13, 2010

My little girl turned 2 this summer and I know it might sound crazy to the average outsider, but as her mama I really feel like she's outgrowing her nursery a little. I never thought this time would come, it felt so far away when I was putting the room together, but she is definitely not a baby anymore. Here's a little "mood board" I made to work through the changes I'd like to implement over the next few months.

-Walls: Luckily, I went with a very neutral "white dove" paint on the pine tongue-and-groove walls. You can see it on the walls, here. It was a b$%ch to paint the wood so it'll stay as is, which is fine, I love the color, it feels very "happy."
-Bed: She'll be inheriting my old childhood antique pine bed. It'll need a new mattress and box springs and it's shorter than the standard bed-size so those will need to be custom made. Luckily, there's a bed-manufacturer locally that does custom sizes for around the same price as the standards.
-Bedding: I've already bought a navy and white striped sheet set, as well as a pea green brocade duvet for the foot of the bed. I'm going to use a white coverlet I already had for the main blanket to break up the two patterns. I've got my eye on a Magenta Beads bolster from Hable Construction for an accent, and I bought a bright pink sheet set to construct the bedskirt.
-Seating: I have a pair of cane chairs in my basement, one-of which is painted white and is partially recovered in a pea green fabric from my upholstery class days. I'll have to finish it up, but I still have the fabric and the hard part (the seat) is done so I've got a good head start. The chair definitely needs a fun pillow. Of course, I'm looking at something from Hable, either the Fuschia Rope or the Burma Flower. I also (already) have a white garden stool to set next to the chair, I think it came from T.J. Maxx or Marshalls.
-Storage: My plan is to find a nice (cheap) antique or vintage dresser and paint it navy, like the one shown here by: Abby Hendrickson. Not sure about the hardware yet, I think I have to wait and see what the dresser is like and how far apart the holes are. My mom is giving me her dollhouse-shaped bookcase. It's not the one shown but it's similar. I already have some of these storage bins from Land of Nod in the green/blue color-way but I think the bright pink will work nicely with her new things.
-Artwork: stay tuned for the artwork post later in the week. I'm still working on my picks.

SO funny! Just last week I was talking with my husband about refreshing my 2.5 year old daughter's room! Looks like we're in the same boat. But I'm not nearly as organized as you, coming up with a mood board and all. I love what you came up with!

I love it all! Can't wait to see the completed room! Caroline's room is still a work in progress. I love the dresser and the striped sheets.

What a fabulous color combination ... I love anything navy and was just eyeing up the navy bedframes at Land of Nod for my little guy. Polly is one lucky girl!
