fun winter DIY from five green acres: sweater mittens

December 09, 2009

I saw a pair of these fun mittens at the Holiday Craftacular fair here in Madison, Wisconsin, a few weekends ago. The maker, Mary Jo of Five Green Acres wasn't offering the mittens for sale, but promised a free DIY tutorial through her blog. She emailed me this week to say that the tutorial was up, complete with patterns, diagrams and pictures. There's also a flickr group dedicated to the mitten-makers and Mary Jo has asked for feedback on her instructions.

With the mittens in mind, I headed up to my closet and while I could certainly come up with a few sweaters that would be better suited as something else, none are quite cute enough for my efforts in this project so I'm headed off to the thrift store to see what I can find. Maybe I'll pick up a few surprises while I'm there, I've been known to do that now and then. Are you up for an early winter project? Happy sewing.

Had to ask (as all my friends say that Madison is draped in snow) how you are faring? I once got caught in such a mess on the beltline by Whitney Way. It was scary. At least you got some mittens to battle the storm.

I think there's about 16 inches on the ground. No car rides today, the whole town is nearly shut down. I'm cozy by the fire with my hot chocolate and already went for a snow-shoe walk today.

I lived in Chicago for 10 years and thought I was tired of the snow. Now that I live in Tennessee, I miss it!!! I'm jealous!

I love those mittens! They remind me of some I had when I was a kid, thank you for the link!
