The Vintage Dollhouse

March 16, 2013

I'm so sad this blog has sat still for so long.  I actually have a lot to share, but not a lot of time for documenting so I'll just do what I can, when I can.  I'm honestly not sure I can remember how to insert and re-size the pictures correctly but here goes.

This post is about a dollhouse I made over for my girl's Christmas present.  It's one of 2 dollhouses my dad made for my older sisters when they were little.  Of course, I didn't take a before picture, but just envision a dirty white old dollhouse, still charming but in need of love.

Most of the furniture was re-used from the old set.  A lot of it I painted and generally updated.  I used a "fat quarter" of darling Liberty of London printed fabric for the window treatments and bedding.  The prints are so cute and the scale was perfect.  I did buy a new kitchen set with appliances and a dinette set (do people still say that? dinette?)  Anyway...that purple chair/ottoman, side table and couch were handmade by my mom.  I never stop being impressed by her skills.  I spent a month updating this piece and my mom and dad spent a few weeks building/making/sewing everything pretty much from scratch (times two.)  Impressed.

The living room is my favorite.  Like I said, my mom made that couch, chair and ottoman.  I re-covered the couch in the liberty print and re-painted the fire place (which she also made, I think) with chalkboard paint.  The framed print is just a fabric scrap and I also made the matching drapes.  The rugs in the house are grasscloth cut to fit and trimmed in ribbon.  Yep, this family of orphans went custom.  The only "people" are 2 babies, one school-aged child and a teenager.  The mom and dad were headless.  Not a fun thing to see on Christmas morning so I left them out.

I wanted to paint a few of the back walls, besides the attic playroom which went pale coral pink, all the walls are currently white.  I planned to do the kitchen turquoise and the bathroom in the same bright coral pink from the front door and shutters.  The roof and chimneys were originally red but I re-painted them in the dark grey chalkboard paint.  I think I planned to draw on scalloped shingles but I forgot about that until just now while I was typing this.

Forgive some of the photography.  These rooms were super hard to shoot.  This room needs some paint on the wall,  but I love the color the little curtains and picture added.  The rug is made from Polly's old roman shades from her nursery.  This liberty fabric was my favorite from the group.

The navy curtains and bedding are original to the home, circa 1970 with a simple addition of some new liberty accents.  The bed is pretty messed-up, it has no legs.  I was going to try to use screws instead and paint them white but I ran out of time.  I should have painted the wardrobe a fun bright color but didn't work that out in the planning phase.  This is the second custom grasscloth rug.

This young lady is the oldest child in the house.  She's the responsible older sister.  She reads the paper and eats cake for breakfast.  How cute is that ruffled curtain?  I made that, and my mom made the chairs and upholstered them.

Ha, the scale is a bit off between the cradle and the twin beds.  The cradle is actually bigger than the beds.  Oh well.  The curtains in this room look a lot like Liberty but they are actually original.  I added the little orange ball-trim.  I always wanted an attic playroom as a kid.  Something about them just seemed magical to me, I don't know.  These kids got one and it's pretty cute, too.

Looking at these, I'm reminded of all the things I planned to do but didn't but I still think it turned out pretty cute.  I try hard not to over-parent when she plays with it.  I only cringe a little when she moves everything around, but I do always clean it up back to the way I like it when she's done.  Merry Christmas, Poll doll.  P.S. Happy March!

my top 12 etsy purchases to date

February 01, 2011

I was looking through the "purchases" section of my Etsy this weekend and realized that so many of the purchases I had made over the past few years were still making me happy every day. It was really hard to narrow it down but here's a list of my very favorite 12:

1) Seeing these in the nursery every day is like having a may pole or a carosel in the room, how could they not make me happy? $36.00 MyFavouriteDress
2) This guy is just so cheery and cute. Whenever I find him in the toy basket I grab him out and stick him on a shelf or stool, he deserves a showcase, don't you think? $30.00 Buttercupbloom
3) I picked these as part of my top 12 simply because I had been searching for them for so long. The $20 price tag didn't hurt, either. I painted them turquoise and hung them in my kitchen. PattisPolkaDots.
4) $30 for a giant, hand-letterpressed perfect sentiment. I own this in grey and yellow. Hijirik
5) A larger scale Alicia Bock print, perfect for my porthole frame. $50 AliciaBock
6) I know I should stick this in my daughter's room, but I'm keeping it for myself for now. $46 Neawear.

7) This sweet little bird is on display in my girl's room. Her bonnet is made of tissue paper. $25, KidsHaus
8) Can you tell I love to decorate kids' rooms? This is also a great new-baby gift, from Emilie Friday, $32.00.
9) Michele Maule is definitely a favorite, I have her Seven Wishes Screenprint ($15) and ...
10)...original mixed-media painting ($125). They're both in my entryway art wall.
11) This is one of my most recent purchases. The colors of the screenprinted hearts on this napkin are so unusual and bright, and the linen is so pretty. I'm a little sad that it's sitting in a drawer, waiting to be used for a dinner roll basket. I may need to get the tea towel and put it out on display. $14 lineacarta
12) I own two very similar original paintings by this artist and have them hanging together. $75 JKirchgraber. It looks like I've been his only customer.

So, what have been your top 12 purchases to date?

a good mail day

January 09, 2011

The mail has been a bit of a bummer since the high season of holiday cards and catalogs ended. Last Friday was a fun little exception, with two surprises in my box.

The first was a sample pack from Hable Construction. Now, just to be clear, I ordered the samples, the surprise was that some of them came much larger than I expected.

I even had enough of the magenta to make this cute clock for my little girl's new room. The hands of the clock would be much better in white but I'm trying to use what I have on hand (it's one of my intentions for 2011.) Doesn't everyone have clock parts and embroidery hoops in various shapes and sizes laying around?

My second surprise was this new book by Bunny Williams: Scrapbook for Living. My friend Mary who works for her in New York sent it to me as a gift. It's even signed--too, too sweet.

There are so many sources of inspiration online that I visit regularly, but I so miss settling in with a good home decor mag in hand. I can't wait to dig in.

washi tape fun for my holiday cards

December 23, 2010

My goal for my holiday cards this year was to use only what I had on-hand for supplies. I had five or six designs using different shapes and sizes of cards and envelopes from my arsenal. It actually helped me keep going because making 80 of the exact same thing can get very boring. I started them Thanksgiving weekend and finished-up on Sunday.

So, most everything is checked off my list. I didn't bake the cookies as planned, and I made only one doll dress, instead of the multiple pieces I had planned on. It turned out pretty cute though, and my girl is only 2 so I've got some time to make up for it. Ah well.

my garden journal

April 26, 2010

Okay, let me just start out by saying this is not going to become a gardening blog. Promise! However, I am enjoying my time in the dirt more than ever this year and I can't help but share my excitement.
Remember this top 12 post I did on gardening picks last week? Well, I mentioned wanting to put together a journal and this weekend, I did just that. I love having fun little customized Moleskines for different parts of my life that need lots of notes. I have one for Art Wall, one for Save Gocco, one for my book club, and now, one for my gardening "journey."

inspired by: mood board

February 03, 2010

Can you tell I'm up to something? This collage is an assignment for an e-class I'm taking called Blogging Your Way, taught by Holly of Decor8 and Leslie of A Creative Mint. This week's assignment was to put together a "mood board" that represents the look and feel of your blog.

I incorporated the pool blue as my main background color, then stitched it to my folder using red thread (a little accent color, just like online). I used the stitching to also represent my love of sewing all things handmade in general. I grabbed a few of Jess Gonacha Swift's drawings for the site which I keep in a folder. There's a few images of art walls pinned to the board, one is from Domino Magazine and the other is from Dujour. I sewed bits of doilies in 2 corners to represent my love for pretty, girly things and tucked a few mini pieces of art inside. The photograph is by Alicia Bock and the parakeet is one of my favorite Gocco prints by AnnaKlara from Art Wall's Studio. It usually lives in my office and helps to keep things prettied-up in that tiny space. The glassine envelope has some beautiful stamps from the Phillipines from the Gocco swap I hosted last year. The stamps from one of the participants were too lovely to toss so I pegged them to the wall in my studio. I included a polaroid because I love the look of them and I use a pseudo "polaroid" frame now and then to highlight images in the blog. Last but not least is the logo card. I printed the image with my Gocco last year and (as anyone who uses this magical little contraption knows) printed this image on anything and everything I could get my hands on. I ended up with a nice little stack of stationery for thank-you notes and general business correspondence.

I really loved working on this little project, I've been so busy online lately that I haven't had much time for doing much with my hands besides typing. I've always enjoyed taking creative classes, learning new things and meeting people. I might pop in with a few more little hints at what we're working on throughout the next few weeks, stay tuned.

other greats from christmas 2009

December 31, 2009

Here's a few more greats from Christmas 2009. This is a painting my sister-in-law Danielle made for us. Isn't it interesting? Dani was an art teacher before she retired to raise her own burgeoning artists. She doesn't have an online shop yet but I'm pushing it. Another favorite from this year is the Raggedy Ann doll my husband's 85-year-old Grandmother made for my girl. It's nearly as big as she is and every part was hand-assembled. My sweet P will have it the rest of her life, I'm sure.

Speaking of my husband's grandmother, she stole the show with her gift-giving this year. The best was her present to my previously mentioned sister-in-law, Danielle. She had a small, elegantly wrapped box that was presented to Dani with a speech about how she had waited and waited for the right moment to pass down this sentimental heirloom. Dani welled up--as did many of us-- as she opened the box with care to find a perfectly-preserved Christmas G-string inside! She got Dani back after "Santa" special-delivered the same pair to her last Christmas Eve, she had been plotting her revenge ever since. Bravo, kudos, and high-fives, Norma!

new year's eve prep

December 28, 2009

Poor New Year's Eve, I feel sorry for it sometimes, it doesn't get a lick of publicity until after Christmas is over. Little ol' New Years gets 6 teeny tiny days of hype, right as the world is kinda hyped-out. This year, we're going to a friend's dinner party to play games, drink Champagne (which is my drink of choice any night of the year) and have a carpet picnic all night long. I'm in charge of table decor and favors so I've been on the hunt for festive party crackers. This pretty yellow/black/silver number I found on Etsy might fit the bill. I'm such a sucker, I stuck it above the other handmade options 'cause it has a prettier picture. I could always try to make them myself, but after the madness of last week, I'm a little spent. Amazon has some that aren't quite as pretty but could be dressed up with some paper scraps, pretty ribbons and other fancy bits I have laying around. At any rate, some combination of the above 3 will be made/purchased/doctored up. Stay tuned.

have a magical christmas

December 23, 2009

I'm signing off for a few days, but I'll leave on a high note with this image of my 4th grade Christmas. My mother handmade the "art aprons" for me and my doll Jenny and guess what? I still have them. I can only describe Christmas day at my house as "magical," not because we were showered with expensive gifts or the latest "it" toy, but because we always received something that was handmade with love by my parents aka Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Whether it was a puppet theatre, custom clothes for our babies, a rubber-band gun, a doll house or a nearly life-sized covered wagon, there was always something under the tree that nobody else had. The most special part about those gifts is that they withstood the test of time. I'm not exactly sure what happened to the covered wagon, but everything else made its way to my home 20+ years later and is waiting (patiently) for a new generation of love.

P.S. she made those pillows in the corner too, she's a star.

2010 diy to-do list

December 15, 2009

In 2010, I vow/pledge/hope to:
1) Paint all my wood floors white, or at least one level to start. The hubs is on board, we're putting down roots, yikes! Images: Domino Magazine
2) Sewing projects: some pretty pillows for most every room, and a cute dress for my girl from this Alexander Henry "Aviary" fabric I have laying around. Pillow image: Cluck. Cluck. Sew.
3) Pimp this dollhouse. "Santa" gave it to me when I was in the 3rd grade. It was the last year I believed, I found the box for the kit in the basement. Nice one, mom! Things have changed since 1983 so I'm going to jazz it up a bit before I pass it down to my sweet P.

sweater mittens, check!

December 13, 2009

I had a very wintery and cozy few days this weekend. I'm really embracing this season which is a new thing for me. We visited our friends out at True North Ranch near Spring Green, Wisconsin. Truely a lovely evening with a snowy drive, delicious dinner and peppermint stick ice cream by the fire.

I worked on a few wintery projects including starting and finishing (well nearly) a pair of sweater mittens based on this tutorial. Mary Jo had a similar pair on display at the craft fair when I met her. I really liked the design so while I tried to think of other more original ideas, I remembered the wise words of Will Smith and his back-up singers: "if it ain't broke then don't...don't try to fix it." I'm not quite done with them, I still need to sew the bottom together hence the creatively cropped image. One red cross came out a little wonky and the thumbs are a little different in length, but I love them just the same. What wintery and cozy things have you done to embrace this season?
